Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup pink or red frosting
  • Sprinkles, for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a mini heart-shaped pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan, filling each heart about 2/3 full.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, frost the mini heart cakes with pink or red frosting and decorate with sprinkles.

Notes

For an extra touch, add a few drops of red food coloring to the batter for a deeper red color. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
