Valentines Day Sugar Cookies

Delight your loved ones with these soft and buttery Valentines Day Sugar Cookies, perfect for sharing sweet moments with beautiful heart-shaped decorations.

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Red and pink colored sugar or sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using).
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk one tablespoon at a time until the dough is soft but not sticky.
  6. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto prepared baking sheets.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass, then sprinkle colored sugar or sprinkles on top.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden around the edges.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra festive cookies, use heart-shaped cookie cutters and decorate with royal icing or edible glitter.
