Valentine Sugar Cookies

These Valentine Sugar Cookies are the perfect homemade treat to share with loved ones. Soft, sweet, and beautifully decorated, they’re sure to make anyone’s Valentine’s Day extra special.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the frosting:

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (red, pink, etc.)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and extracts.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Cut out cookies using heart-shaped cookie cutters.
  9. Place cookies on ungreased baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat together the butter and powdered sugar until smooth.
  13. Gradually add the milk and vanilla extract, beating until light and fluffy.
  14. Divide the frosting into separate bowls and add food coloring to each bowl.
  15. Frost the cookies and decorate with sprinkles, if desired.
  16. Let the frosting set before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough. Store frosted cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
