Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Colored sprinkles or sanding sugar, for decoration
  • Glaze:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla and almond extracts.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  4. Divide the dough in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into strips about 1 inch wide and 4 inches long.
  7. Twist each strip and place on the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  9. Let cookies cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Glaze: In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency.
  11. Dip each cookie into the glaze and then immediately sprinkle with colored sprinkles or sanding sugar.
  12. Let the glaze set before serving.

Notes

For a festive twist, add a few drops of food coloring to the glaze. These cookies are also delicious plain, without the glaze.
