Southern turnip greens recipe

This Southern turnip greens recipe delivers tender, flavorful greens simmered with smoked ham hock for a classic, comforting side dish. A touch of vinegar and red pepper flakes adds a tangy kick and subtle heat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds turnip greens, washed and chopped
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 6 cups chicken broth or water
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Add the smoked ham hock to the pot, followed by the chopped turnip greens and chicken broth (or water). Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 2 hours, or until the greens are tender and the ham hock is falling apart.
  3. Remove the ham hock from the pot and shred the meat. Discard the skin and bone. Return the shredded ham to the pot.
  4. Stir in the apple cider vinegar and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Simmer for another 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Serve hot.
