This Southern Maple Sweet Potato Casserole elevates a classic side dish with the warm flavors of maple syrup and a hint of Southern charm. It’s the perfect addition to any holiday table or cozy weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • For the Topping:
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Boil sweet potatoes until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well.
  3. In a large bowl, mash the sweet potatoes. Add the melted butter, maple syrup, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar, and flour for the topping. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is heated through.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For an extra touch of Southern flavor, add a tablespoon of bourbon to the sweet potato mixture. Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of extra pecans.
