Southern Fried Cabbage

This Southern Fried Cabbage recipe is a simple, flavorful side dish that’s quick to make and packed with smoky goodness. Tender cabbage is cooked with bacon and onions for a comforting, Southern classic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 head of cabbage, cored and chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, reserving the bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook in the bacon grease until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and stir to coat with the bacon grease and onions.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and apple cider vinegar. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  5. Cover the skillet and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally.
  6. Stir in the cooked bacon and serve hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika or a dash of hot sauce. Serve as a side dish with your favorite Southern comfort food like fried chicken or pork chops.
