Shrimp Dirty Rice is a flavorful Cajun-inspired dish combining spiced shrimp, bell peppers, onions, and celery cooked with rice for a hearty and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 cup red bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup celery, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Rinse rice under cold water until water runs clear.
  2. In a medium saucepan, bring chicken broth to a boil; add rice, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 18-20 minutes until rice is tender.
  3. While rice cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add diced onions, celery, and bell peppers; sauté for 5 minutes until vegetables are softened.
  5. Add garlic, smoked paprika, thyme, cayenne, black pepper, and salt; cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  6. Add shrimp to the skillet; cook 3-4 minutes until shrimp turn pink and opaque.
  7. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and cooked rice; mix thoroughly and cook for another 2 minutes to combine flavors.
  8. Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

For extra heat, add more cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce. This dish pairs well with a crisp green salad or steamed vegetables.
