Scalloped Potatoes

Scalloped Potatoes are a creamy, cheesy baked side dish featuring thinly sliced potatoes layered with a rich sauce, perfect for comforting dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 2-quart baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until slightly bubbly but not browned.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and bubbles. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Layer half of the sliced potatoes and onions (if using) in the prepared baking dish. Pour half the sauce over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half the shredded cheese.
  5. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.
  6. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 25–30 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

For an extra flavorful dish, add a pinch of nutmeg to the sauce or top with crispy breadcrumbs before baking.
