This classic Scalloped Potatoes recipe features tender, thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce, making it a comforting and delicious side dish perfect for any meal.

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic; cook until translucent.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, nutmeg, and cheddar cheese until melted.
  6. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  7. Add the remaining potatoes and top with the rest of the cheese sauce.
  8. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  11. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy top, broil the scalloped potatoes for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking. Serve alongside roasted meats or a fresh green salad.
