Homemade Green Bean Casserole

A classic homemade green bean casserole featuring tender green beans baked in a creamy mushroom sauce topped with crispy fried onions, perfect for family dinners and holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Blanch the green beans in boiling water for 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp; drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and mushrooms and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually whisk in milk and broth, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  7. Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well and remove from heat.
  8. Combine the blanched green beans with the sauce and transfer to a baking dish.
  9. Top evenly with crispy fried onions.
  10. Bake for 25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
  11. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

For an extra creamy casserole, substitute half-and-half for the milk, and add shredded cheddar cheese before baking.
