Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, for brushing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center and pour in the cold buttermilk. Stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 3/4-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Using a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Serve warm.

Notes

For extra flaky biscuits, try folding the dough a couple of times before cutting out the biscuits.
