These adorable Heart-Shaped Cupcakes are perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion! Fluffy and moist, they’re topped with a delicious frosting and shaped into hearts using a simple baking trick.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • Pink food coloring (optional)

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. Place a marble or heat-safe ball of foil between the liner and the tin on one side to create a heart shape.
  2. Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. If desired, add a few drops of pink food coloring.
  6. Fill Cupcake Liners: Fill each cupcake liner about 2/3 full.
  7. Bake: Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool: Let the cupcakes cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Make Frosting: While the cupcakes are cooling, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, until the frosting is smooth and creamy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  10. Frost and Decorate: Once the cupcakes are completely cool, frost them with the buttercream frosting and decorate with sprinkles.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use browned butter in the frosting. You can also add a dollop of raspberry jam to the center of each cupcake before frosting.
