Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • For the frosting:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring of choice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  4. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk one tablespoon at a time until dough is soft but not sticky.
  5. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness.
  6. Cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter and place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  7. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are just starting to brown.
  8. Allow cookies to cool completely on wire racks before frosting.
  9. To make frosting, beat together powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Add food coloring as desired.
  10. Spread or pipe frosting onto cooled cookies and allow to set before serving.

Notes

For extra festive cookies, try decorating with sprinkles or edible glitter on top of the frosting.
