French Toast Casserole

This French Toast Casserole is a rich and comforting breakfast dish featuring custardy baked bread slices, perfect for family brunches or special mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, cut into cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • Powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak all bread pieces.
  5. Cover the casserole with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and flour. Using a pastry cutter or fingers, cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the soaked bread.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a handful of fresh berries or chopped nuts to the topping before baking.
