Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups cubed day-old bread (such as brioche or challah)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing gently to soak all pieces.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the soaked bread.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
  7. Remove the dish from the refrigerator and bake covered for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake an additional 25-30 minutes until the top is golden and the custard is set.
  9. Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Top with maple syrup, fresh berries, or a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a sprinkle of chopped nuts or a handful of chocolate chips before baking. This dish can also be prepared the night before to save time in the morning.
