Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup French onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup French fried onions, crushed
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, French onion soup mix, crushed French fried onions, bread crumbs, minced garlic, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form mixture into 1½-inch meatballs and place them in the crock pot.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are caramelized (about 15 minutes).
  4. Sprinkle flour over the caramelized onions and cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
  6. Pour the onion gravy mixture over the meatballs in the crock pot.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 6–7 hours or on high for 3–4 hours until meatballs are cooked through and tender.
  8. Serve the meatballs hot, spooning extra sauce over the top.

Notes

For an extra creamy sauce, stir in 1/4 cup sour cream just before serving. These meatballs pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
