  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup crushed toasted pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Steam or boil the broccoli florets until just tender, about 4-5 minutes, then drain and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until the sauce thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses until melted and smooth.
  6. Add garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  7. Pour the cheese sauce over the cooked broccoli and gently stir to combine.
  8. Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle with crushed toasted pecans if desired.
