Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting or icing for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a smooth dough forms.
  6. Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  7. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them on prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are set. Avoid overbaking to keep cookies tender.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Decorate as desired with powdered sugar or icing once cooled.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of espresso powder to the dough or dip the cooled cookies in melted chocolate for a richer treat.
