  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt 4 tablespoons of butter and spread evenly in the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the melted butter. Arrange apple slices in a decorative pattern over the brown sugar.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. In a separate large bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, oil, egg, and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Pour batter evenly over the apples in the cake pan.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
  9. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and brush over the top of the cake. Serve warm.

Notes

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra decadent treat.
